Haikou’s Jiangdong New Area, one of 11 key areas for the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port, used to be home to many abandoned fishponds. However, in order to restore the area’s ecological environment, in recent years the entire area has been transformed into a place of outstanding natural beauty, dotted with lush green wetlands.
One of the many areas which have taken on a new look after the completion of these ecological restoration projects is the Maiya River Wetland Park. With a total planning area of 567.8 hectares, Phase I of the project is now complete. Phase I covers nearly 150 hectares, almost twice the size of the Evergreen Park, a downtown Haikou landmark.
The Phase I Project started in December 2019, and took nearly two years to accomplish multiple tasks including wetland ecological restoration, coastal forest ecological restoration, water supply & drainage, landscaping, and building a boardwalk on the water, a coastal walking path, public service stations, and other facilities.
